Keoladeo National Park

Keoladeo National Park, earlier known as Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, is a popular avifauna sanctuary that is home to a wide variety of birds. Particularly in winter the place is agog with thousands of migratory birds that make sanctuary their home. A rough estimate puts the total number of species of birds in the sanctuary to be around 230. It is also a major tourist center with scores of bird lovers frequenting the place to spot their favorite bird. The place also plays host to a number of ornithologists who visit the place particularly in hibernal season. The place was declared a protected sanctuary in 1971. It is also a declared World Heritage Site.

The most important thing to know about Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary is the fact that it is one of the man made and man managed national parks of the country. It has immense value for the region as it protects the place from floods and provides grazing ground for cattle. It was also earlier used for waterfowl hunting ground.

This 29 km reserve is popular amongst locals as Ghana and is home to a mind boggling 366 bird species, 379 floral varieties, 50 types of fish, 13 varieties of snake, 5 types of lizards, 7 amphibian varieties, 7 turtle types and a host of other invertebrates. Add to it the fact that every year thousands of migratory waterfowls visit the park for breeding and the reason for the phenomenal popularity of the place gets unraveled.

Indeed, Keoladeo National Park is one of largest areas for birds in the world. One of the biggest bird watching sites in Asia the place is always teaming with people. These include serious bird lovers to school children who enjoy their outing. Moreover the location of the park is so convenient that people visiting Agra, Fatehpur Sikri and Jaipur invariably choose to visit the park. The park remains open from sun rise to sun set all the year round.

Apart from the normal sightseeing trip visitors can even choose to drop in at the park from any of the luxury train services. The famous Palace on Wheels include Keoladeo National Park in its itinerary.

I booked a travel package of Rajasthan for me and my friend. It was a 15 day trip of India's desert state. Most of the cities we visited were well connected with national highways, providing us the easy accessibility of various places. However, some areas were congested making for us difficult to reach on time that may be because of development works on going on places. We loved our heritage hotel stays at Jaipur and Udaipur. We enjoyed the excursions of remote villages and desert. Good execution of trip.
