Religious Places in Rajasthan

Rajasthan is synonymous with India's cultural ethos where different faiths co-exist together in perfect harmony. The skies of Rajputana reverberates with the melodious hymns emanating from temples and sufi music emanating from mazars giving the place a religious feel that is without any tinge of hatred or ill will towards any community or individual. Some of the leading religious destinations of Rajasthan are discussed below.

Brahma Temple at Pushkar


Situated close to Pushkar Lake, Brahma Temple is the only temple in the world devoted to Lord Brahma. Though the present temple appears to belong to 14th century yet is largely believed that the temple is at least 2000 years old. Thetemple itself is constructed of marble and stone stabs. It also has a distinctive red pinnacle and a hamsa of bird motif. The centre of the temple has the temple of Lord Brahma and Goddess Gayatri.

On Kartik Poornima a fair dedicated to Lord Brahma is organized which witnesses a rush of pilgrims to the temple. The devotees take a holy dip in the temple before entering the temple to pay obeisance to Lord Brahma.

Ajmer Sharif


Held in very high esteem by both Hindus and Muslims, Ajmer has the mausoleum of the famous Sufi Saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti. Also popular as Dargah Sharif, the final resting place of the revered saint who breathed his last in 1235, the shrine is located at the foot of a barren hill. The shrine is frequented by both Hindus and Muslims who come here in to seek the blessings of the saint to overcome their suffering.

The biggest attraction at the shrine is the Urs or annual pilgrimage that is organized in the month of May when millions turn around to pay obeisance to the saint. Within the precincts of the shrine is a mosque which was built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. Like all other Shah Jahan's creation. The mosque itself is made of white marble and has a long and narrow courtyard where the devotees can offer namaz. The monument has beautifully done calligraphic instructions, delicate carvings and exhaustive trelliswork.

Birla Mandir


Located in Jaipur, Birla Mandir is part of the many Birla Temples located across the country. This particular Birla Temple is located at an elevated place at the base of Moti Dungari hill. The temple is also sometimes referred as Lakshmi Narayan Temple.

Galta Temple


An ancient Hindu pilgrimage center in the town of Khaniya Balaji, Galta Temple is set in a coplex which has several temples and kunds where pilgrims bathe. It is widely believed that Saint Galav spent his life here and did his penance and meditation. The place is particularly important to Vaishnavite Ramandandis.

Mehndipur Balaji Temple


Located in Dausa district this temple is dedicated to Lord Hanuman. The people visiting the place is firmly of the view that deity in the temple can cure people possessed by evil spirits. It is also believed that the devotees here are saved from unfavorable planetary condition.
