Dances of Rajasthan

Like other specialties of Rajasthan the dance forms prevalent in the region are also full of verve and energy. These dance forms are passed on by generations and carry the flavor of Rajasthan which make it exclusive of the region. These dance forms are mostly connected with celebrations or festivities and witness wholesome participation by locals.

The specialties of the dances are that they are very expressive and full of energy. Each and every detail about the costumes, make-up and other big, small requirements of the spectacle are taken care of and no stone is left unturned in a bid to make the event a smashing success which more often than not is the case.

Each dancer knows his craft inside out and is a veteran in performing the art. Rajasthani dance forms have been performed for generations and are important pieces of history in themselves. Given below are some of the popular dance forms of Rajasthan.

Chari Dance

This dance form sees the dancer make delicate hand movements while skillfully balancing the brass pots on her head.

Drum Dance

A very famous dance form of Jalore, Drum Dance is a professional dance form which can only be performed by men.

The dance itself involves five men who all participate with huge drums around their neck. A naked sword is virtually shoved inside the throat of one man while he juggles with three in his hands while ensuring that no injury is inflicted on him. All this while his troupe, which consists of musicians entertain the gathering by its lilting music.

Fire Dance

Jasnaiths of Bikaner and Churu excel in Fire Dance. The dancers perform on large tract of burning coal without any discomfort while their movements match to the beating of drums. The spectacle reaches to crescendo with the dancer in a trance, completely taken over by the art he is performing.

Fire Dance which essentially is a devotional dance form is performed mostly on winter night.

Gair Dance

Gair Dance sees the participation of both men and women. Men wear long, overflowing pleated tunics that open into full length skirts as they move first in clockwise and then in anti-clockwise direction, all this while beating their sticks to generate rhythm that matches their turn while they move.

Ghoomar Dance

Ghoomar Dance is a community dance form performed only by women and is out of bounds for men. The dance itself is very simple and depicts swaying movements which symbolizes the spirit of the auspicious occasion. Though the dance is very simple yet it has grace as the skirts of the dancers swing very rhythmically while women move in circles with their faces covered by the veil.

As per conventions all the women whether old or young take part in the dance which can carry on for hours into night. Newlywed bride is also expected to perform Ghoomar while she is welcomed to her new house.

Kalbeliya Dance

Kalbeliya Dance form is considered to be one of the most sensuous dance forms of Rajasthan. It is performed by tribes with the same name. Both men and women of the tribe take part in the dance which is an integral part of their culture and ethos

Testimonial

I booked a travel package of Rajasthan for me and my friend. It was a 15 day trip of India's desert state. Most of the cities we visited were well connected with national highways, providing us the easy accessibility of various places. However, some areas were congested making for us difficult to reach on time that may be because of development works on going on places. We loved our heritage hotel stays at Jaipur and Udaipur. We enjoyed the excursions of remote villages and desert. Good execution of trip.
