Rajasthan Costumes

A vibrant and colorful state, Rajasthan oozes of excitement and verve like no other destination in the world. Witnessing the exuberance and never say die attitude of its populace, it is impossible to think the difficulty they surmount for their mere survival. This free spirit is displayed in every aspect of their lives and attire is no different.

The cloth worn by Rajasthani people are colorful and exhibits their zest for life. Each part of their attire be it turban, cloth, jewellery or even footwear (foot wears in Rajasthani are intrinsic part of attire) each share the liveliness of its wearer and add a glowing radiance to the landscape of the place.

Men's attire largely includes of pagdi (turban), angarakha, dhoti or pajamas, kamarbandh or patka (waistband) whereas women of the region largely prefer Ghaghra (long skirt), kurti or choli (top or blouses) and the odhani.

Mojaris or Jutis comprise of the footwear which is worn by both men and women. Camel's leather is also worn by people as it is very soft. Wearing sheepskin as well as goatskin is also prevalent in Rajasthan as they are sturdy and very comfortable to wear outside. The shoes or Mojaris are mostly embroidered with velvet or brocade. The foot wears of Rajasthan especially from the regions of Jaiselmer, Jodhpur, Ramjipura and Jobre are famous across the world.

Rajsthanis are very fond of Jewelry. Jaipur has an entire market - Johri Bazar dedicated towards jewelry and one can find exclusive pieces of gems available there. Women of Ghayari, Mina and Bhil communities prefer brass ornaments made by Bharawa community. The Rabaris of Sirohi as well as Raikas of Jodhpur opt for heavy silver jewelry which mostly have inexpensive glass pieces studded in them.

Apart from metal jewelry Rajasthan is also famous for making jewelry of lac. The jewelry of the region is mostly decorated with minute glass pieces. Women of South Rajasthan mostly prefer bangles made with coconut shell with silver strip in the centre.

Ornaments of both gold and silver are prominent in the state. Urban Rajasthani women wear, necklace, ear rings, rings and nose rings though on select occasions exquisitely prepared ornaments are also worn. These can be specially prepared for different parts of the body.

In earlier times ornaments were worn by both men and women. Men however have given up wearing jewelry of late leaving them exclusively for women.

Testimonial

I booked a travel package of Rajasthan for me and my friend. It was a 15 day trip of India's desert state. Most of the cities we visited were well connected with national highways, providing us the easy accessibility of various places. However, some areas were congested making for us difficult to reach on time that may be because of development works on going on places. We loved our heritage hotel stays at Jaipur and Udaipur. We enjoyed the excursions of remote villages and desert. Good execution of trip.
