Udaipur Tourist Places

Also popular as City of Lakes, present day Udaipur is a municipal council and administrative headquarter of Udaipur District. A historic city, Udaipur was once the capital of Mewar which was ruled by Guhils (Sisodiya) clan till Maharana Udai Singh founded Udaipur. Later, after the capture of Chittor by Mughal Emperor Akbar in 1568, Udai Singh transferred his capital to Udaipur which being a mountainous terrain managed to escape the Mughal dominance.

However, after the weakening of Mughal Empire the Sisodia rulers recaptured most of Mewar. They however failed to capture the original capital of Mewar - Chittorgarh. Udaipur continued to be the capital of the state which became a princely state of British India in 1818.

Udaipur has a number of attractive places which draw tourists from far and wide. Some of the leading attractions of Udaipur are:

City Palace


A palace complex, City Palace was built by Maharana Udai Singh in 1559. The palace is made distinct by the use of fusion architecture merging both Rajput as well as Mughal styles of architecture. The palace itself is perched on a hill top and offer enchanting view of the city. The City Palace has a number of palaces within its complex. Built on a grand scale, City Palace is a prominent landmark of Udaipur and a must visit for all those visiting Udaipur.

Monsoon Palace


Originally christened as Sajjan Garh Palace after Maharana Sajjan Singh who constructed it, Monsoon Palace is perched on a hilltop and offers panoramic view of the lakes, palaces and adjoining countryside. The palace was built primarily to watch the enchanting monsoon clouds as they mark their captivating entrance over the skies of the area hence it is very appropriately called Monsoon Palace. It is also believed that Maharana got the palace constructed on a hill top so that he can gaze his ancestral home of Chittorgarh. The palace was earlier under the occupancy of Mewar's Royal Family. It is however now undertaken by the Forest Department and of late has been opened for public. The place attracts large number of tourists who throng to the palace to see the enchanting views of the neighborhood.

Fateh Sagar Lake


One of the most beautiful lakes in Udaipur, Fateh Saga Lake was developed by Maharana Fateh Singh after the original lake constructed by Maharaja Jai Singh I in 1687 had its earthen bund washed away by the flood that hit the area after 200 years of its construction. Maharana Fateh Singh got the lake reconstructed in 1888. The lake is since then named after him as Fateh Sagar Lake. The foundation of the new construction was laid down by Duke of Connaught, the third son of Queen Victoria. The place is a favorite amongst tourists who never forget to visit the place whenever they visit the city. Three islands formed within the lake further enhance its attraction. The biggest of these islands is known as Nehru Park and is particularly popular. The tourists just love to visit the beautiful garden, zoo and the lovely restraint set here.

Lake Pichola


An artificial lake of fresh water, Lake Pichola was constructed in 1362. The lake got its name from nearby Picholi village. Lake Pichola is amongst one of the many contiguous lakes which were developed in last few centuries in and around Udaipur to meet the demands of drinking water and irrigation of local populace. The lake also has two islands - Jag Niwas and Jag Mandir within its precincts which offer wonderful view of the lake and are popular tourist spots.

Sahelion ki Bari


Sahelion ki Bari was developed for 48 young women who came to Udaipur with a princess as her dowry. Sahelion ki Bari is one of the most beautiful gardens in Udaipur and a major tourist attraction. The garden is situated below the embankment of Fateh Sagar Lake and allows a welcome retreat to people from the oppressive heat of the region. The garden itself is replete with lotus pools, marble pavilions and elephant-shaped fountains and is one of the popular venues I Udaipur.

Udaipur Solar Observatory


The only Solar Observatory in Asia, Udaipur Solar Observatory came into existence in 1976. Set on one of the islands on Fateh Sagar Lake the observatory has the best possible base as the air turbulence which happens because of heating of the land is decreased which improves the image quality and accuracy. It is also one of the frequently visited in Udaipur.
