Mehrangarh Fort

Mehrangarh Fort

Perched at about 400 feet above the city and protected by imposing walls which surrounded it, Mehrangarh Fort has several beautiful palaces with intricate engravings and opulent courtyards. The fort still has the imprint of the ravages of wars that the place has witnessed over the years.

The fort has a total of seven gates. One of which is Jaya Pol (victory gate) constructed by Maharaja Mansingh to commemorate his victory over the armies of Jaipur and Bikaner. Other gate which is important amongst seven gates of the fort is Fatteh Pol (also meaning victory). Fateh Pol was built by Maharaja Ajit Singh to mark the event when he reclaimed the fort from Mughals.

Within its precincts Mehrangarh Fort houses a museum which is considered by many to be one of the best museums in the region. It has several interesting galleries. One of which, Palanquin Gallery, has a collection of vintage collection of royal palanquins which also include Mahadol Palanquin which was won over from the governor of Gujarat in the battle in 1730. The museum also has a wide range of arms, costumes, paintings etc.

The fort has a number of attractive palaces which enhance its attraction manifold. Some of the other major palaces in the Mehrangarh complex are discussed below.

Moti Mahal - Pearl Palace

It was constructed by Raja Sur Singh and is largest of all the palaces within the precincts of Mehrangarh Fort. It has five alcoves which lead to hidden balconies. These balconies were constructed to allow the five queens of the Maharaja to listen the court proceedings without being spotted.

Sheesh Mahal - The Hall of Mirrors

Sheesh Mahal is a perfect example of typical Rajput Sheesh Mahal. Its mirror work is inclusive of large regular pieces rather than intricate mosaic of tiny fragments. Another innovation that makes the Sheesh Mahal unique is the superimposition over the mirror work of sprightly painted idols made in plaster.

Phool Mahal - The Palace of Flowers

Built by Maharaja Abhaya Singh, Phool Mahal is the most impressive of all the palaces in the fort. It probably was a pleasure retreat for the Maharaja who used it to overcome his fatigue and boredom of daily chore.

Takht Vilas - Mahara takhat Singh's Chamber

Built by Maharaja Takhat Singh who also made it his abode Takht Vilas sees an amalgamation of traditional Rajput styles of architecture and the British way which sees the use of glass balls on the ceiling.

Testimonial

I booked a travel package of Rajasthan for me and my friend. It was a 15 day trip of India's desert state. Most of the cities we visited were well connected with national highways, providing us the easy accessibility of various places. However, some areas were congested making for us difficult to reach on time that may be because of development works on going on places. We loved our heritage hotel stays at Jaipur and Udaipur. We enjoyed the excursions of remote villages and desert. Good execution of trip.
