Hawa Mahal

Hawa Mahal

Built in 1799 Hawa Mahal or the Palace of Winds owes its construction to Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh. Designed by Lal Chand UStad the structure appears in the form of the crown of Hindu deity Krishna.

Its 953 small windows or jharokas gives it an impression of honeycomb of beehive. Intricate latticework further decorates these jharokas which were constructed with the purpose of allowing the royal ladies to see the activities on the street without being noticed.

The palace itself is constructed of red and pink sandstone and is located in the heart of Jaipur's business centre. Hawa Mahal appears especially attractive early in the morning when the rays of early rising sun make the structure appear like gold.

Hawa Mahal can be traversed through an imperial door from the side of City Palace. This passage takes one to a big courtyard which is surrounded by double storied building from three sides while Hawa Mahal flanks it from the fourth. An archeological museum further makes the place even more attractive.

Hawa Mahal today is a paramount landmark of Jaipur and makes the region popular around the world. It also draws large number of tourists who jostle to catch a glimpse of the majestic structure. The monument is often crowded with curious onlookers who never seem to have enough of this wonderful structure.

Today Hawa Mahal is a prominent hang out options in Jaipur and can be seen crowded with foreigners who might have come from distinct places or agog with locals who might have come there to enjoy an outing with friends and families.

Testimonial

I booked a travel package of Rajasthan for me and my friend. It was a 15 day trip of India's desert state. Most of the cities we visited were well connected with national highways, providing us the easy accessibility of various places. However, some areas were congested making for us difficult to reach on time that may be because of development works on going on places. We loved our heritage hotel stays at Jaipur and Udaipur. We enjoyed the excursions of remote villages and desert. Good execution of trip.
