Chittorgarh Fort

Chittorgarh Fort

The biggest USP of Chittorgarh Fort is the fact that it is the biggest fort in India and is the one most spectacular in entire Rajputana. The fort itself is about 180 m in height and is perched on top of a hill and runs over an area of about 6911.9 acres. The fort was originally occupied by Guhilot and then passed over to Sisodiyas who belonged to the Suryavanshi clans of Chattari Rajputs. They were the ones who occupied the palace from 7th century to 1568 when it was abandoned following a siege of Mughal Emperor Akbar. The fort has within its precinct a range of historical palaces, gates, temples and two gigantic commemoration towers.

Chittorgarh Fort is a perfect embodiment of Rajputana's gallantry and pride. It has a long and distinguished history of valor, determination and sacrifice. This imposing structure boasts of glorious palaces, majestic cenotaphs and gigantic towers.

Chittorgarh Fort can be accessed through seven colossal gates (Pols) which also served the purpose of watch tower at night. First gate to be encountered in the way of fort is Ram Gate (gate dedicated to Lord Rama) which has a temple in its vicinity. Moving further would take one to two cenotaphs which are close to Padal Pol. These cenotaphs remind one of the gallant sacrifices of Jaimal and Kala who fought bravely against Akbar till they were martyred.

Moving ahead, one would come across a memorial constructed to honor Rawat Bagh Singh who forged an alliance with Vikramaditya to battle against Sultan Bhadur Shah. Bhairon Pol is named after Bhairondas Solanki who also fought against Sultan Bahadur Shah. The main gate to enter the fort however is named Suraj Pol or the Sun Gate. Ganesh Pol, Jorla Pol, Lakshman Pol and Hanuman Pol are the names given to other gates of the fort.

Other than these massive gates the fort also has a number of palaces. Rana Kumbha Palace and Padmini's Palace are the pride of the place. Rana Kumbha Palace has underground cellars where it is believed that Queen Padmini committed 'Jauhar' by immolating herself along with other women and children.

The fort also has many glorious temples within its precincts as well as couple of glorious towers 'Vijay Stambh' and 'Kirti Stambh'. Kirti Stambh is a seven storied structure 22 meters in height. Dedicated to first Jain Tirthankar Adinathji, Kirti Stambh was built in 12th century. Vijay Stambh, on the other hand, is a victory tower constructed by Rana Khumba to commemorate his victory over the combined armies of Malwa and Gujarat

Testimonial

I booked a travel package of Rajasthan for me and my friend. It was a 15 day trip of India's desert state. Most of the cities we visited were well connected with national highways, providing us the easy accessibility of various places. However, some areas were congested making for us difficult to reach on time that may be because of development works on going on places. We loved our heritage hotel stays at Jaipur and Udaipur. We enjoyed the excursions of remote villages and desert. Good execution of trip.
