Urs, Ajmer Sharif

Urs, Ajmer Sharif

Urs, Ajmer Sharif An annual event held at Ajmer, Urs commemorate the death anniversary of the revered Sufi Saint Moinudding Chisti (he founded the Chistiya Sufi order in India). The festival is celebrated for six days and witnesses night long rendition of qawwali. The occasion itself falls in the seventh month of Islamic Lunar calendar and witnesses a large number of pilgrims visit the shrine from India as well as abroad.

The Urs of Moinuddin Chisti was first celebrated in 1212 AD and the event has continuously been celebrated since. The word Urs is derived from the word 'uroos' which means an individual's ultimate meeting with God. It is believed that Moinuddin Chisti spent the last six days of his life in seclusion in a Huzra (prayer room) and on the sixth day of Rajab he breathed his last. It is for this reason that Urs of Moinuddin Chisti is celebrated every year in the first week of Islamic month of Rajab.

The sixth day of Urs is considered to be the most auspicious and is known as "Chatti Sharif". It is celebrated on 6th Rajab between 10 AM and 1:30 PM and takes place inside the shrine. 'Shirja' is read by 'Khadims' of Moinuddin Chisti which is followed by 'fariyad' (prayer).

Before the 'Qu'l' (conclusion of Chatti Sharif) 'Badhaawa'(a poem of praise) is recited at the main entrance of the shrine. Badhawaa recitation is unique for it only allows for clapping (musical instrument is not allowed as far as Badhaawa is recited). The Badhawaa, it must be noted was composed by Syed Behlol Chisty who is one of ancestors of present day Khadim community.

After the recitation of Badhawaa the Qu'l ceremony draws to a close and is followed by the recitation of Fatiha. Firing of the canon at 1:30 PM symbolizes the end of the ceremony.

Testimonial

I booked a travel package of Rajasthan for me and my friend. It was a 15 day trip of India's desert state. Most of the cities we visited were well connected with national highways, providing us the easy accessibility of various places. However, some areas were congested making for us difficult to reach on time that may be because of development works on going on places. We loved our heritage hotel stays at Jaipur and Udaipur. We enjoyed the excursions of remote villages and desert. Good execution of trip.
