Marwar Festival Jodhpur

The fairs and festivals of Rajasthan can broadly be classified in two categories. One are those types which owe their origin to mythological legends and are dedicated to Gods and Goddesses while the second belong to the category when a fair or festival is dedicated to honor the heroes of the land. Marwar Festival falls in the second category and is celebrated in the memory of the heroes of Rajasthan.

The festival itself falls in the Hindu Month of Ashwin (Sept-Oct) and is celebrated in Jodhpur which holds the honor of being the former capital of Marwar province. Originally known as Maand Festival, it is celebrated for two days on Full moon of Sharad Purnima.

The massive and majestic Mehrangarh Fort and Ummaid Bhawan Palace plays host to the Marwar festival which sees congregation of a multitude of folk dancers and singers who bring to life the glorious Rajasthani culture and the heroes who laid down their lives fighting to preserve and protect the honor of their beloved motherland.

The event sees fiery presentation of traditional Rajasthani folk dance where in dancers perform with earthen pots on their heads and also on bare swords. The event also sees the traditional Kalbeliya dance which has won rave reviews around the world. Seeing the dancers give an electrifying performance of the art give goose bumps to people.

Some of the other events that add attraction to the event are the staging of adventure sports like horse riding, horse polo as well as shows like camel tattoo show.

The festival gives the tourists a perfect opportunity to have a look at the rural side of Rajasthan and witness for themselves the day to day activity in the villages. Apart from taking photographs with the villagers the guests can also buy memoirs for their visit which would remind them of the memorable sojourn that they had in Rajasthan (Jodhpur).
