Jaipur Elephant Festival

Jaipur Elephant Festival

Pink city becomes even more colorful in March and it is not only because of the arrival of Holi, that glorious festival of delightful colors, but because of a pre-Holi extravaganza set amidst elephants. Indeed, elephants are symbol of royalty for long in Indian culture but when it comes to Rajasthan their value is somewhat elevated. Camels may be the most visible identity of desert but it is the royalty that gives swagger to this desert land and elephants are epitome of swagger and royalty so their connection with royal Rajasthan simply cannot be negated. Jaipur Elephant Festival is just the occasion when Rajasthan renews its ties with this glorious and gigantic beast.

The festival itself gets underway with musicians playing lively folk tunes and dancers matching them in the grandeur of performance. Amidst this musical backdrop marches in the contingent of elephants, well adorned and looking resplendent in their regal avatar. Elegantly attired and embellished with glittering golden ornaments, the elephants are center of attraction of every visitor present there.

Making this day long festival even more attractive is the hosting of a number of games and competitions that are organized on this occasion. Take for instance the competition of best decorated elephant in the parade. Though the winner brings loud cheer from the crowd yet it is one hell of a task to pick a winner from amongst the gathering of several brilliantly adorned elephants. Equally enchanting are the games involving elephants which include elephant polo, elephant race and a unique tug-of-war contest between elephants and humans!

Jaipur Elephant Festival is organized every year by Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation and is held at Chaugan Stadium in Jaipur. Tourists from distant parts of the country as well as abroad come to catch a glimpse of one of the most colorful of all festivals in the state.

Testimonial

I booked a travel package of Rajasthan for me and my friend. It was a 15 day trip of India's desert state. Most of the cities we visited were well connected with national highways, providing us the easy accessibility of various places. However, some areas were congested making for us difficult to reach on time that may be because of development works on going on places. We loved our heritage hotel stays at Jaipur and Udaipur. We enjoyed the excursions of remote villages and desert. Good execution of trip.
